Vasovasotomy - Vasectomy Reversal Vasovasotomy is the medical name for vasectomy reversal. It is an
outpatient procedure usually done under general anesthetic. It is a
tedious surgical procedure which is best done with the help of an
operating room microscope.
The most important predictive factors for whether a vasectomy
reversal will be successful are the experience of the surgeon and
the length of time it has been since the patient's vasectomy.
On
average each urologist in the United States performs fewer than one vasovasotomy per year. Since this is a
technically difficult
operation, where the sutures used are finer than human hair, an
experienced micro-surgeon is important.
While there is no time limit
as to when a vasectomized patient may no longer consider a vasectomy
reversal, the sooner after the vasectomy the better.
Data has shown that the odds of success are improved for those
closer to the time of vasectomy. Overall success rates must be
measured ultimately in pregnancy rates.

The best data would still
only give the vasectomy reversal patient a 50-75% chance of getting
his wife pregnant (This percentage may actually be higher when we
consider other female fertility procedures).
Vasovasotomy Cost
The most common reason potential patients ultimately decide
against vasectomy reversal is cost. Insurance pays only very rarely.
